Gig Update News! flashing_new_5.gif - (1K)

SAT., AUG. 7TH 2004 AT MAPLES (See other tidbit at Long Island Blues Society Site)

Last night I returned to Maples in Manorville, LI to play with my friends Mike Scalzo (drums) Rich Thiel (bass) and Bill Marino (guitar). Bill is a great player and this was our first gig together so that was cool. He had a nice ‘68 SG—-bought from jazz legend Steve Khan--set up for slide, and I played it for “You Shook Me” and “Sweet Home Chicago.” I had only played once with Mike and Rich before and this was a first for the four of us, so we had to pull out whatever we could as the night went on.

There was a real good crowd at Maples, in particular a large group of “Hamptons chicks” as they were being referred to. We are talking some major ass-shaking here, especially from this one exceptionally talented girl who said, “You’ve got to work what your mamma gave you.” She did. They were reliving their own favorite “Sex and the City” episode. One of them wanted to sing though she had no idea what she wanted to sing; after a half-ditched approach to ‘Mustang Sally” she got it together for that Tracey Chapman blues tune which Rich knew, thankfully. She did a good job on that one and it was actually pretty fun.

The owner Martie was super-nice and she had me sign a poster that Debbie Dunn had made for us—-thanks Deb; great job! I borrowed Scalzo’s “From Fuji to the Maples” line and Martie said she was going to hang it someplace cool---I hope she didn’t mean behind the fridge in the kitchen.

Highlights from the night included a pretty burning version of ‘Jumping Jack Flash”---it was a real rock show and people danced their asses off---and the closer, “Born to Be Wild,” was real good too. Plus “Had to Cry Today,” ‘Mississippi Queen,” “Never In My life,” “Presence of the Lord,” “Them Changes”---that’s what fun about playing with these guys: we pull out some cool tunes that are fun to play.

We’ve got a Sept. 18 gig coming up at the Blue Parrot which I think is in Massapequa......maybe it’ll be “Hampton chick reunion night”...........
