"TRIBUTE TO HENDRIX"

On September 12, I flew out to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland to play at a special Tribute to Jimi Hendrix concert, which coincided with the release of the new 4-cd box set, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The box features over 4 hours of music, most of which is previously unreleased--it's really good.

I played the concert with Double Trouble--bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton of Stevie Ray Vaughan fame--along with singer Malford Milligan of Storyville. The four of us had never played together before, though I did play with Tommy and Chris on their Hot Licks instructional videos, and did some jamming with Tommy at his house in Austin, Texas.

Though we only had about a 20 minute rehearsal, the show was killer--we played "Spanish Castle Magic," "Manic Depression," "Angel," and "I Don't Live Today," and we had also rehearsed "Little Wing" and "Them Changes," which featured a segue in and out of "Wait Till Tomorrow."

After the first four songs, I introduced Kenny Olson, Kid Rock's guitar player, who was to join us for "Little Wing." Just then, Mitch Mitchell got on the drums and Billy Cox picked up the bass, and Billy said, "Let's play Voodoo Child." Playing with Mitch and Billy is off the scale--it was just too much. Then we had a big jam with all of the guitar players--Eric Gales, Kenny, Yogi from Buckcherry, and a few others--on "Freedom." And the crowd went wild--it was something else.

Another highlight was that I had about a 30 minute jam with Billy done in the dressing room before we went on. We played "Power of Soul," "Message To Love," "Freedom," "Izabella," "Blue Suede Shoes" and a few others (plus a bit of "Look Over Yonder"!). That was one of the biggest highlights of the entire event! Billy and Mitch are just the greatest, as are Chris, Tommy and Malford. Hopefully, we'll all be playing together again soon...
